Every technique carries two truths — an ancient wisdom and a modern science. Open each topic and toggle between lenses to explore both sides of the practice.
Universal Harmony
By breathing in a perfect rhythm, we align our internal microcosm with the macrocosm of nature — the tides, the seasons, and the orbits of the stars. Equal breathing is the practice of becoming a conductor of your own energy. Ancient yogis understood that the breath is the one bridge between the voluntary and involuntary. To master the rhythm of your breath is to master the rhythm of your life.
Heart Rate Variability & the Autonomic Nervous System
Rhythmic breathing at 5–6 breaths per minute synchronizes the heart, lungs, and brain into a state of coherence — where the Autonomic Nervous System finds perfect balance. This measurable state reduces cortisol, lowers blood pressure, and dramatically increases emotional resilience. HRV is now one of the strongest biomarkers of overall health and longevity.
Kumbhaka — The No-Mind State
In ancient traditions, Kumbhaka is the gateway to the “no-mind” state. By pausing the breath, you pause the fluctuations of the mind — what the yogis called Chitta Vritti. This pause is a rehearsal for “dying to the self,” a momentary dissolution of the ego that allows for deep connection to source, to higher consciousness.
The Bohr Effect & Your Internal Pharmacy
Holding the breath on the exhale creates a brief state of low oxygen (hypoxia) and elevated CO2. This triggers the body’s internal pharmacy — releasing stem cells, boosting red blood cell count, and optimising how oxygen is delivered to the brain and tissues. The Bohr Effect explains why more CO2 actually improves oxygen delivery.
The Primordial Sound of the Universe
“A-U-M” represents the three stages of all existence: creation, preservation, and dissolution. It is considered the primordial sound — the vibration from which all reality emerges. Chanting AUM vibrates the physical and energetic bodies simultaneously, clearing stagnant energy, awakening dormant awareness, and returning the practitioner to a state of fundamental wholeness.
Nitric Oxide & the Parasympathetic Response
The humming vibration of the AUM chant physically stimulates the Vagus Nerve through the vocal cords, instantly triggering the parasympathetic (rest and digest) response. Additionally, humming in the nasal passages increases Nitric Oxide production by up to 15-fold — a potent vasodilator and antiviral agent.
Mula Bandha — The Root Lock
The Bandhas are energetic seals that prevent Prana from leaking out of the body and instead direct it upward toward the higher chakras and the pineal gland. The Mula Bandha draws life force up the spine, awakening dormant energy and supporting spiritual clarity. You are not just locking a muscle — you are redirecting the current of your own life force.
The Glymphatic System & Brain Health
Physically, engaging the pelvic floor and core muscles acts as a pump that increases cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, moving it toward the brain. This supports the glymphatic system — the brain’s waste-clearance mechanism — improving the removal of metabolic waste and potentially reducing neuroinflammation.
The Modern Ritual
For millennia, humans have used repetitive tribal rhythms to enter trance states and access dimensions beyond ordinary consciousness. The music in Breathful Beats sessions is a modern ritual — intentionally designed to facilitate what the ancient texts called a “SOMA Awakening.” The beat is not background. It is the guide, the anchor, and the doorway.
BPM, Frequency & Neural Synchronisation
Specific BPMs and frequencies encourage the brain to shift from Beta (anxious, analytical) into Alpha and Theta states — the neurological zones associated with flow, creativity, and deep meditation. This is called brainwave entrainment. The brain naturally synchronises to external rhythms, meaning the music actively reshapes your neural state.
The Rig Veda & the Sacred Elixir
In the ancient Rig Veda, Soma is described as the sacred elixir of the gods — a substance that granted immortality, visions, and connection to the divine. In the Breathful Beats practice, Soma is not something we consume — it is something we create within ourselves. Through breath, rhythm, and intention, we activate our own inner pharmacy.
The Body as Its Own Pharmacy
While the science is still emerging, the combination of alkalinity from rhythmic breathing and hypoxia from breath retention may trigger the release of endogenous neurochemicals — including tryptamines, endorphins, and other compounds associated with bliss and expanded awareness. The body is its own most sophisticated pharmacy.
Understanding the practice is one thing. Feeling it is something else entirely.
